ENCOUNTERS OF THE CLOSEST KIND BY GENTLE GIANTS

For head-guide Jesse Flores and captain Jon Christian, it was just another fine day for whale watching, clear skies and wavy - yet acceptable conditions. The journey started off as usual – happy whale watchers delighted to start their excursion around the beautiful and scenic realm of Skjalfandi bay. Then, all of a sudden, with no time to spare fortune struck upon the crew and passengers and without warning, there they were!

A duo of one of the most magnificent creatures to wander the earth and now within our bay and just metres away - spout insight 4 metres high! Return of the humpback whales, “at last we meet again,” said the guide Jesse while captain Jon C. shouted joyfully “is this whale watching or what!”  No doubt our gentle giant passengers were thrilled yet the surprise was still to come as the humpbacks would soon prove. For about 10 minutes these majestic whales kept lazily feeding all around our boat Faldur as it was apparent that there was a group of small fish clinging to the boat for protection and the humpbacks relished the moment. For our gentle giant whale watchers and crew, this became the most unforgettable experience ever so far for the season.

One of the humpback unexpectedly remerged from beneath the boat Faldur, as it took in a large mouthful of seawather and tiny fish.

The tiny fish seeking protection around our boat, where no match for the hungry humpback.

This humpback wasn't at all bothered by the presence of our drifting boat, and came up just in front of the boat.

Like from the movie Jaws, one of the humpbacks encircling the boat, not for our passengers, but rather tiny fish.

There she blows ...

Both humpbacks satisfied with what they were after and swimming in the waters of Skjalfandi bay.
