The Húsavík Whale Museum Turns 10!

Ten years ago – in 1997 – the Húsavík Whale Museum was established by Ásbjörn Björgvinsson along with many other individuals and companies in Húsavík, as well as by owners of Gentle Giants.

The museum is a nonprofit educational information centre dedicated to the promotion of whales and whale watching and provides visitors with information about whales’ lives and their habitat around Iceland.

It all started with a small exhibition on whales, which was the so-called trial version of today’s museum. Only three years later, due to the increasing popularity, it was possible to acquire and remodel a more suitable building. What had once been the disused slaughterhouse, now offers 1,800 mfilled with interesting information and life exhibits. Since its establishment back in 1997, more than 100.000 people have visited the museum and is steadily increasing.

Gentle Giants sends their best wishes to the Whale Museum and hope for good years to come!
