FLATEY & FLATEYJARDALUR

Flatey the paradise island and Flateyjardalur welcomed us with its calm sea yesterday, after sailing through the waves across Skjálfandi bay on Faldur and the company’s Zodiac.  It is a known fact that the weather in Flatey is usually much calmer than on the bay, and even than on the mainland, making the island the perfect place to be!

Our mission to Flateyjardalur was to pick up a group of Icelandic mountaineers and sail them on Faldur to Flatey, for a guided tour around the island, looking at birdlife and abandoned buildings.  The group had been hiking for a few days, from Náttfaravík across the bay from Húsavík, and was ending the trip the day after hiking through  the famous area of “Fjörður” west of Flateyjardalur.

The abandoned homes of Flatey

Kofinn – gourmet hut prepared delicious and warm steak sandwiches and the group was offered the local beer of Eyjafjörður called Kaldi, which seemed to make everyone happy, as they sang with the tunes of Jón Sigurjónsson playing the accordion.

Here Faldur is leaving Húsavík Harbour, with only 3 people on board, Captain, Cook and an accordion player:

A sandwich for everyone! Captain Stefan and guide Jesse:
