First Impressions of Húsavík

Peter Waltl is our latest member of our team this year. He comes from Austria and is studying geography in Salzburg. It is a pleasure having him on our team this year – this is what he had to say about his first impressions …

After travelling around for some days in Iceland, I finally arrived almost one week ago in this beautiful village – sorry, city, of course – to work here as a GG-Guide.

After almost one week I can resume that it's just awesome here!!! So many great whales all those days I have been here. We even got Blue Whales in the Bay, the biggest animal which has ever been alive! Normally those blue whales don't show their fluke when going to their deep dive, but those we had here were doing it almost every time, which makes me even luckier!

We also do have loads of Humpback whales here, which are so great, because of almost always showing their fluke when deep diving.

Yesterday, we got a Minke Whale so close to the boat, that it almost touched it. It was swimming there close to the surface, looking at us curiously, diving under our boat to look at us from the other side, circling around the boat for some more minutes to finally disappear in the depth again … I got goose pumps up there on the roof of the captain’s cabin.

Every time I see one of those whales endorphins are shooting into my blood and I have to admit that I got addicted to whales! And I am under the impression that all the other guides and employees do so as well. It’s the fascination on whales which unites all of us and that’s why it’s like being part of a big family.

Húsavík itself is just cute ... 2500 inhabitants ... it's like everyone knows each other ...

Well, that’s pretty much all about my first impressions here.

Hopefully this great time will continue as long as possible!
