JUMPING JACK

Since I have arrived more than three weeks ago I have already had a lot of really good trips, but then, a few days ago I had the most amazing and impressive trips ever. In the first of those three trips a humpback jumped seven times in a row! As if this hadn’t been enough, some dolphins showed up at the same place and began to jump as well – with the humpback at the same time. Next, those dolphins bumped with full speed into the humpback for several times. Just for fun ... The humpback was probably quite ticklish, as it rolled around in the water like crazy. And the whole scenario played next to the boat.

Then, two days later the same humpback jumped at least four hours in a row!!! I don't know how many hundred times. When we arrived the spectacle began: Firstly, it splashed its fluke several times on the surface of the water. Next, it splashed its flippers on the surface and then it jumped. It jumped and jumped and jumped. Every few seconds this enormous animal put up its 30 tons in the air, as if it was light as a feather. We spent one hour with, before returning to Husavik. Two hours later, in the evening trip, we returned and the whale was still jumping – together with two further whales! All in all, there were three jumping humpbacks at the same time now. I have no idea what was going on there, but it was just great! We spent another hour with the jumping humpback and even when we left it was still jumping. CRAZY. I took 180 pictures, then my memory card was full and I unfortunately had to quit ... Hlynur the captain found a suitable name for this humpback: Jumping Jack. Talking about Hlynur, it seemed that he liked the trip as well, since we returned half an hour too late in the harbour.
I LOVE being a guide on those tours when everyone - from the captain to the passenger - is happy and satisfied.

I think Jumping Jack is still here in Skjálfandi Bay and I hope to have some more encounters like those a few days ago.
