NORTHERN BOTTLENOSE WHALES

In some of our tours the last days we have had some very unusual sightings – northern bottlenose whales in Skjalfandi Bay!

The northern bottlenose whales are very uncommon on our tours and therefore a very nice surprise and pleasure seeing them.

Belonging to the toothed whale family, the northern bottlenose can reach the length of 9 metres and 8 tonnes.

They prefer deep waters, and like sperm whales, they are able to reach high depths in the search of food and are able to stay submerged for at least one hour.

Northern bottlenose whales are known to leap – and we have for sure seen them leaping out of the water many times for the last days!
