CLOSE ENCOUNTERS WITH DOLPHINS

Our Gentle Giants team consists of people who care about whales, marine life and nature altogether. Some of our crew members have been working closely with marine mammals before joining our team and sharing both local and global experience with our passengers.

Two of our guides, Lia Askelöf and Daniel Annisius, are both very enthusiastic about whales and dolphins, and have been working with Cetaceans for some time. They spent their Christmas holidays in Sweden where they experienced some real close encounters with dolphins. This is their story:

“Watching, hearing, feeding, touching and kissing dolphins! As whale and dolphin lovers, what more can you really ask for?

Our biggest adventure this Christmas was definitely our trip to Kolmården Marine World. Kolmården is the biggest zoo in the Nordic countries, opened in 1965 and is the home of 80 species of wild and fascinating animals. One of its main attractions is the dolphinarium, which was actually the first one in Scandinavia.

A few years ago Lia was studying animal keeping in zoo parks, and through the education she got to know some of the dolphin trainers and their animals. She still has all the contacts and arranged for a private tour around the Marine World for both of us.

Lia’s friend, dolphin trainer Sunna Edberg, was our guide through the Marine World. She introduced us to many interesting animals, for example the Humboldt penguins and different kinds of seals - grey-, harbour- and fur seals - but the dolphins were indeed our main interest.

The encounters with the bottlenose dolphins were without a doubt the most touching and remarkable experience! The feeling of touching them is quite indescribable. We have both been working with dolphins in the wild nature in Skjálfandi Bay, but sensing those mammals in this way certainly gives a complete new dimension. An unforgettable experience which will hopefully help us understand and respect nature better.”
