BLUE WHALES + HUMPBACKS + MINKES + DOLPHINS

Today was a fantastic day out on Skjalfandi Bay. A really perfect day with the whales! It all started this morning when both of us headed out on Sylvia with a special group. Weather conditions were fantastic, light winds and good sea conditions.

We hadn’t sailed for very long until we spotted minkes and dolphins. Those two species had been our main stars on our tours for the last days so we weren’t really expecting something else. But as always, nature is unpredictable and full of surprises. Suddenly guide Lia spotted a big blow in the distance and it turned out to be a nice humpback! In the next tours we managed to get great views of the humpback as well as minkes and dolphins.

The joy got even more on the 20:15 tour. Again we were both on Sylvia – a very nice and calm evening. Then it happened – guide Daniel spotted two majestic blows on the horizon and the excitement grew enormously. The first blue whales of the season were found! The biggest animals ever to wander the earth were just a few metres in front of us! We managed to get good views of the blue whales and both passengers and crew returned to Husavik harbour with big smiles and everlasting memories.

Today was Lia’s first day out on Skjalfandi Bay this season – and we certainly believe that she brought the blues and humps with her from Sweden. Also what is interesting about our blue whale spotting tonight is that for the past two years, we have spotted the first blue whales exactly around the beginning of June!
