Not only whales make people find their way to Northern Iceland, but also the fish. During this week the 2010 European Boat and Line Championship (EFSA) is held in Dalvík (in the next fjord west of Skjálfandi). Gentle Giants’ contribution to the competition is our traditional oak boats Sylvía and Faldur. Captains in charge of them are Óðinn and Bessi; members of our crew and sailors with decades of experience.
The competition is hard, 142 registered anglers compete in many different fields e.g. “heaviest cod”, “largest flatfish” and “single day’s best catch”. The price is a trophy or medal - and the honour of course.
Captain Bessi, onboard Faldur, says that the weather has been very good. What he has enjoyed also is to have a new group of people onboard every day, as the anglers rotate on the boats (to make it fair for everyone). That gives a possibility to meet different professional fishermen from all over Europe - enjoying themselves big time when practising old Icelandic traditions.
Lia
A happy sea angler during an EFSA competition.
