THE SEA WOLF WITH EAGLE EYES
Nature is unpredictable. During the second half of June we got used to watching minkes and smaller whales. The humps and blues were not too cooperative. Our theory is that there has not been enough of krill and plankton in the bay, which makes them search for food in other areas.
It was soon a week ago since Danni and I found a beautiful blue whale on an amazing evening trip on the 28th June. We watched a minke when Danni suddenly saw a spout, far, far away. There was no doubt – it was a blue. Those are the trips that we - as guides - will also remember forever...
Since then it has been quiet with big whales – until the 16:45 trip today when our experienced sailor with trained eyes, Óðinn, found a humpback. It was a new individual, a stranger to this man who knows this bay as the back of his hand.
Maybe this humpback will stay until tomorrow, maybe even a week or maybe it has already left. No one knows, and that is also the fun of it. Every trip is a new adventure, and even though we have not had any big whales for some time, there is always a chance of finding the really great ones – the Gentle Giants of the ocean.
