HUMPBACKED DOLPHINS IN INDIA

As whale watching guides, it is interesting to travel around and try whale watching in different parts of the world. During our three months stay in India last winter, we therefore did not miss the chance to go searching for whales.

Working in Iceland has made us quite ‘spoilt’ when it comes to whales. For us majestic blue whales, breaching humpbacks and playful dolphins are frequent visitors in our bay during the summer.

On the west coast of India humpbacked dolphins are rather common and many tour operators offer whale watching trips. We sailed out on a small boat together with a guide and a captain. Only a few minutes from the harbour we spotted the several humpbacked dolphins. They didn’t seem to be interested in our boat and kept their distance, but luckily the vessel also kept its safety distance not to disturb the animals.

It was exciting to try another place and see new whale species, as humpbacked dolphins are not found around Iceland. We have both participated in whale watching excursions from different locations around the globe and always learned something new - as no two tours are ever the same.
