LONG LOST BLUE BEASTS ARE BACK

The bay was clear, the sea was calm and the sun was shining. It started like a good minke trip, but turned out to be an experience far greater than ever expected. Back then we had no idea what would meet us 40 minutes later on the other side of the bay ...

Captains are constantly in contact at sea. Our main man onboard, Bessi, got a call about BIG news and changed the course of the boat to west-north-west. Only the crew onboard had any idea about what was going on and what we were heading towards. A few minutes later we could all see a spout, a very big blow, in a distance. It was an amazing feeling as none of us had seen any bigger whales since the middle of June. Daniel, second guide onboard, has been involved in the company for nine years and this was the first season when he did not see any real Gentle Giants in July. But now we have entered a new month and it started very well!

When coming closer we realised that what we had in front of us was not only one - but two blue whales. One was bigger than the other and our guess is that it was a mother and a calf together. Our boat was slowly drifting and the blue whales were chilling along our side, breathing. One blow reached higher than the other.

After some time we left them to be in peace and turned back towards Húsavík again. All onboard were more than satisfied, enjoying the hot chocolate in the sun, listening to the sound of rippling bow waves. It was an amazing trip, with encounters we could never have dreamt of before. Those are the tours which we as guides look back at with a smile after the season, when it is dark and cold and both tourists and big whales have left our country. Today, we got to the best sides of summer in Iceland. This is whale watching in Húsavík - by Gentle Giants, with the real Gentle Giants.
