THREE HUMPBACKS IN THE CALM AUTUM WEATHER
„Keep your expectations low until we see something,“ I told my passengers onboard Sylvía when entering the world of Skjálfandi bay this morning. None of us had any idea what would be waiting out there for us.
At first we headed west towards the mountains of Kinn on the other side of the bay. There we spotted some harbour porpoises and a minke whale and then continued further north along the mountains. After some time it all happened. I couldn’t believe my own eyes as this was what I had least expected – HUMPBACK WHALES in the bay. Not only one, but in total of three animals!
Humpbacks haven’t been seen in the bay for weeks and this is certainly not the main season for humpbacks as they usually start migrating south to warmer waters in late summer. But there they were – three animals just feeding calmly next to the boat giving passengers great views. This is a perfect example of how unpredictable nature can be.
All our passengers as well as captain Bessi and I, were absolutely thrilled when arriving back to Húsavík harbour. A trip we will not forget.
