HUMPBACK WITH BROKEN BACK
It is weird and it is obvious. A humpback whale was spotted the other day, outside Port Allen in Hawaii. That in itself is not unusual, but the shape of it would make anyone look twice.
A local pilot called Gerry Charlebois, found and photographed this odd humpback which seemed like broken on the middle. ”This is one of the most disturbing sights I’ve ever experienced while photographing whales … It was freaky. The whale was bent in half”, Charlebois commented later.
No one knows for sure what has caused this deformation. One theory is that this whale was old or sick and therefore not able to move away quick enough when a big vessel approached, ran over it and broke its back. Ed Lyman, whale rescue expert at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary on Maui, said that it also seemed to be in a very bad condition with skin rashes and loads of parasites except for the broken back.
This very special humpback has managed to move on and has not been spotted again. We cross our fingers and fins for this whale to suffer as little as possible, whatever this deformation is caused by.
