DREAM HUMPBACK ENCOUNTER
Except for the scheduled trips we had an extra tour this afternoon; a group of Icelanders which filled our biggest boat Sylvía. It is always fun when passengers already know each other. The atmosphere tends to be extra merry, and so also today.
Kalli, Daniel and I brought them all out on Skjálfandi Bay and after a dolphin encounter we spotted a blow in the distance. Soon we had met up with a humpback which seemed to sense the jolly atmosphere onboard and intended to join...
There we were in the humpback area, waited excited in silence for it to come up again. I was looking out at the horizon from the crow's nest, searching. When throwing an eye down at our passengers, something which could have been an illusion caught my attention. I could see - second by second - how our giant humpback was coming up slowly like a submarine just beside our boat.
A few more seconds and then … the powerful exhale! My heart was beating so fast. A couple of long moments later it went down, showing its beautiful fluke and we were all on the front row.
Sylvía drifted with the wind, we were taken, and after a short dive it happened again and again. Our humpback seemed happy to join the party – which made everyone onboard even more delighted.
