THE SEAMAN'S DAY 2011

The Icelandic calendar today says "Sjómannadagurinn” (“Seaman’s Day”). It is a holiday to honour all the people working at sea. This is the country of fishermen through generations. We are proud of that and want, through this day, bring our strong and brave seamen into the spotlight.

Somehow it always seems to be good weather on this day and we stick to traditions. The bright sun is shining warm from a blue sky and I would consider this our first real summer day – more than welcome! People wear shorts, eat outside and enjoy the merry atmosphere in town.

Since many years free sailings have been offered to locals on this day, on boats from Húsavík harbour. Gentle Giants participated through offering a test ride on our RHIB Amma Sigga, and to fill her with volunteer passengers took no time!

As all other days we also run our regular whale watching tours and have once again seen both humpbacks and two blue whales. We are happy when our passengers are happy and the Seaman’s day has turned out to be a really jolly day.
