THE TREMBLING BAY

The bay that we do our whale watching tours on is called Skjálfandi Bay. Translated to English that means "The Trembling Bay” and the name is for a reason of course...

The crack between the continental plates - the Eurasian and North American - goes in a vertical line straight through Iceland and in the north it comes out in this bay.

Therefore this is a very geologically active area with loads of earthquakes all the time. Most of them so small that we can not feel them, but technical instruments do.

That is why this bay is called the Trembling Bay, Skjálfandi.

The red line shows the crack between the continental plates, which comes out here in our bay.
