WHALE RESEARCH ONBOARD

For ten days there is a course going on in Húsavík for marine biologists, held by the University of Iceland in cooperation with the Húsavík Research Centre. 26 international students learn different methods on how to do research on whales.

One way they practise is boat based acoustic research. Little groups of students at a time are onboard our whale watching boats and when we have reached a whale area they put down a hydrophone (under-water-microphone) in the water, recording the sounds of the whales and analyse it afterwards.

It is very interesting for us guides to be able to take part and hear the whales which we watch every day. It gives another dimension to the whole experience of whale watching.

Many thanks to Marianne and the University students!
