THE RAINBOW-TRIP

Yesterday evening I had one of the best trips since my one-month-carrier as a Gentle Giants guide started.

I guided Big Whale Safari on Amma Sigga with 12 people on board and Sigdor as captain. The conditions were very good: no rain, flat sea, motivated passengers.

Sigdor and I knew, that we could expect a Humpback north of Lundey. That’s why we headed this direction immediately. We passed Lundey, stopped there for a short moment and went on to find the Humpback. And then we found it – the Humpback we have had in the bay for three days.

It’s a very easy whale - very long on the surface for breathing and we were allowed to come really close! While the Humpback was diving for the fourth time, Sigdor saw a Minke Whale in a group of birds. We went there immediately. Unfortunately the Minke was very busy with feeding and we could see it only twice. But then the Humpback was up again and we left the Minke.

After a while, when the Humpback was diving again, I realised a rainbow close to the mountain of Húsavík. It was so wonderful!

After one and a half hour Sylvía and Náttfari were coming as well and we wanted to leave the beautiful Humpback. But we couldn’t, because our designer wanted to take pictures of Amma Sigga with a whale in front. That’s why we stayed. After the third attempt we got permission to leave. And so we did. But we went not home to Húsavík, Sigdor and I wanted to find some dolphins close to the mountains on the other side of the bay.

When we arrived, there was nothing to see. And then suddenly two blows not far at twelve o’clock! I was sure, that we had two more Humpbacks there! When they came to the surface for breathing the second time it turned out that we had a mother and a calf close to the boat. It was amazing! Sigdor and I decided to stay with them, although time was actually over. After 15 minutes the time pressure made us go home. The captain and I were a bit disappointed that we couldn’t find the dolphins, because it is so much fun to have dolphins all around the boat; playing around, bow riding,…

And then, as if they had heard our thoughts they were all around the boat. Dolphins! They were swimming so close that we could have touched them, if we had reached out our hands. It was wonderful!

Finally we reached Húsavík again - one hour late, but really, really happy. And as if this was not perfect enough, there was a complete rainbow over Húsavík, when we arrived!
