ORCA IN SKJÁLFANDI BAY

First she though is was a "normal" white-beaked dolphin, but the dorsal fin was huge. Soon our guide Ann-Sophie realised that is was an orca that they had in front of them on the 8:45 tour this morning.

It happens just a few times a year that orcas enter our bay and this time it was Ann-Sophie's turn to be the lucky guide to experience an encounter with those beautiful whales. Orcas are the biggest of all dolphins and known for their sometimes brutal games with prey, for example seals.

On 22st July 2008 there was a pod of orcas entering our bay. They killed a minke whale in front of the whale watching boats and the sea turned red. Those were once-in-a-lifetime spectacular news. Our orca spotted today was alone and there was no crime scene this time.

Congratulations Ann-Sophie and her passengers at 8:45 - you were really lucky today!
