WATCHING HUMPBACKS DURING SUNSET

Yesterday we had once again a fantastic Big Whale Safari.

Although there was no one booked at the beginning, we went out with a completely full Amma Sigga. Stefán was the captain and I was the guide. It promised to become a wonderful trip.

In the morning it had been very foggy in the bay, but fortunately this fog disappeared during the day. Moreover the sea had been flat the whole time and we knew that there were about four or five Humpbacks out in the bay. That’s why we were really looking forward to this Big Whale Safari.

Right after we went out of the harbour two Harbour Porpoises crossed our way. We took the chance and followed them for a short while. Then we continued to the other side of the bay. During the trip it started to rain. Actually not very nice, but after a few minutes we had a double rainbow in our back, which was of course incredibly beautiful.

Finally we arrived on the other side and found the Humpback Whales. All in all we saw five of them. The first Humpback was so happy to see us that he started to jump several times. The rest of the trip the whales behaved like it is normally – breathing on the surface, diving and coming up for breathing again. We came close every time and all passengers could get nice pictures of a Humpback’s fluke in the sunset.
