BACK IN SKJÁLFANDI + FIRST FLIGHT TO HÚSAVÍK
Today we went out for the first trip of the season 2012 – earlier than ever before! In best whale watching conditions we sailed on to Skjálfandi Bay in search for whales.
The bigger whales must have had a long lie this morning but we encountered lots of cute harbour porpoises. Our first passengers of the year came from Zimbabwe. They really enjoyed the trip, not only because of the whales, but also because of the beautiful landscape – impressive mountains covered in snow and sunlight.
Beside the whales many birds such as northern fulmars, eider dugs and puffins were flying, swimming and diving around the boat today.
In the next days, more and more birds and whales should arrive from their long winter journeys back into their summer feeding grounds. This means that we will definitely have some more wonderful trips especially if the weather stays like it is now.
This day was not only special for Gentle Giants but also for the town of Húsavík. For the first time in 12 years, Húsavík airport was opened again for regular traffic when Eagle Air landed their first flight from Reykjavík. The airline will offer regular services between Húsavík and Reykjavík. This opens up many opportunities – both for locals and for tourists visiting the north of Iceland!
Here are some photos taken on the first tour by our crew member Sigrún Björg:
