THE FIRST DAY OF SUMMER
Today it is the third Thursday in April and Iceland is celebrating one of its national holidays – Sumardagurinn fyrsti, The First Day of Summer.
Nearly all the shops were closed and many festivities were going on all over the country – especially around Reykjavík. From now on everyone is looking forward to longer and warmer days as well as nature becoming green and full of life again. Although that might sound a bit ironic for those who experienced the snow falling yesterday and this morning and the icy wind blowing at sea.
Despite all that we went out on the bay with some passengers from Australia. At first we sailed to Lundey, Puffin Island. There we could enjoy many of the puffins which have already arrived from the open ocean to find their favourite mating partner for the summer. To watch those “Clowns of the Ocean” with their clumsiness never gets boring and is still a lot of fun even if you have seen them for years.
Unfortunately we have not been as lucky with the whales as we have been with the puffins. It seems like those beautiful marine mammals celebrated their own holiday today and did not want to be watched by tourists. Hopefully they will be back for work tomorrow and swimming around in bay again.
If the weather allows we will depart daily at 9:45 and keep our eyes open for the whales and birds of Skjálfandi Bay.

Puffin - The Clown of the Ocean - is called that for its clumsiness.
You find them in our bay and we take you there!
