FIRST BLUE WHALE OF THE SEASON

What happened today in Skjálfandi Bay feels like a miracle:

We left the harbour at 9:45 during the best conditions imaginable for whale watching; southerly wind and the sea calm as a mirror. That was why we were really optimistic to find at least the humpback whale from yesterday.

Already after 15 minutes of sailing captain Bessi spotted a humpback in a distance. But it was not the same as yesterday. We were with it for quite a while before deciding to go further and try to find something else.

It did not take long until I saw something big and black at the horizon. I was convinced it was the humpback from yesterday. When getting closer we saw a huge blow and knew for sure that we had found a very big whale. After two minutes waiting the giant blow appeared only 15 metres away from the boat, followed by a big blue body. A BLUE WHALE!!!

At first I could not believe my eyes. I thought it must be a dream - not possible. But it was real. We had found Skjálfandi's first blue whale of the season – the biggest animal ever to live on Earth.

Normally the first blue whale is spotted in the beginning of June or end of May earliest.

We followed the giant for about one hour through the bay, before we went back into the harbour with smiling passengers and big smiles on our faces too.

I really hope the early appearance of this blue whale is a sign of many whales in the bay during the summer.
