RETURN OF THE BLUE WHALES

After three days without seeing any big blues, they were back in the bay earlier today.

This morning on the 09:45 trip we got three of those gentle giants around the boat. The blows could be seen from far away and when we came closer we saw the huge blue backs coming out of the water - always a gorgeous experience. Today we were extremely lucky because one of the three blue whales was lifting its fluke out of the water as well, which is something extraordinary to see!

While the blue whales stayed so far out of the bay we could not reach them, other whale-representatives took over. Dolphins families found their way into Skjálfandi Bay. They have been playful and curious most of the time, coming close to the boats and jumping a lot out of the water.

The minke whales which we usually see only two or three showed up in numbers of more than ten individuals. Within this group there were also two calves. A fantastic view!

And then of course the humpback whales; two of them discovered the good food source in the west of the bay. Both of them were known whales to us. One was here already last year and stayed for a few weeks. This year it has been coming and going every now and then. It was feeding a lot during the last days, sometimes even on the surface. So we could see it coming out of the water with the mouth open! Really spectacular.
