EYE CONTACT WITH A WHALE

Have you ever dreamt of looking into a whale’s eye? It is something extraordinary getting the chance to see it. On yesterday’s trip our passengers got this chance. On the morning tour most of the humpback whales that were in the bay were sleeping. This means they were lying on the surface really calm, some not moving at all. One of those sleepy ones allowed us to come very close and when we reached it, it was rolling slowly on the side looking at us as if it was inspecting our boat and everyone on board. A breath-taking experience!

The last three or four days we have been really lucky whale- and weather wise. About 15 different humpback whales found their way into Skjálfandi Bay. Moreover a blue whale visited us as well as minke whales, dolphins and porpoises. In addition to all the whales the weather has been gorgeous too; most of the time sunshine and the sea has been as flat as a mirror.

Besides sleeping, the whales have been feeding a lot and in between some energetic humpback whales showed their power and strength by jumping completely out of the water! It is always wonderful to be present when the “acrobats of the ocean” demonstrate their skills.

Interested in experiencing this? Go whale watching with us and you have a chance to face the whales eye to eye!
