SKJÁLFANDI FULL OF LIFE
Not only the weather is on our side since the last few days, also the whales seem to enjoy spending time in the bay, making it possible for us to observe them every once in a while.
This morning, while we were heading towards the mountains on the other side of Skjálfandi Bay, we were surprised by a huge group of birds. Several hundred arctic fulmars were staying close together, hanging out on the water and every here and then they took off to change place and catch a fish.
We decided to slow down a bit. Not only for watching the birds’ show, but also as we were hoping for a whale to be somewhere in among these birds.
Just a few minutes later a blow appeared and a black mouth broke the surface. A humpback whale was joining the feeding birds, doing just the same.
But it was not only the humpback being really busy with catching fish. Minutes later a minke whale showed up, also circling in this area, searching for the best spot to catch its prey.
As both of them were really focused on their doings, they did not care at all about our boat, giving us the chance to observe them for a longer while and getting really good views.
