TRIPLE HUMPBACK-ENCOUNTER
Now it is already two weeks ago since we started the whale watching season for this year. Despite the fact that we had a lot of different whales, there are more and more whales coming into Skjálfandibay.
Humpback whales, which spend the winter months in warmer waters to mate and give birth to their calves, are now on their way back to the feeding grounds. Many of them will come into the bay here, which is rich of food and thus, a great place to stay for the summer. After an up to three months long journey these whales are now arriving one after another.
When we were heading out into the bay the other day, we were welcomed by three of them. They were resting in the same area close to the mountains, two of them even swimming together for a long time.
Besides, there was a minke whale circling around its bigger companions. For all of us it was a great spectacle to see all this life around. No matter where we looked, there was one of the animals showing up every once in a while.
