UNIQUE HYBRID WHALE HERE
During the last days we have had a very unique whale in our bay. It is believed to be a hybrid of the two largest animal species on earth; a blue whale and a fin whale.
This very special individual was also here two years ago, in 2011. It is big as a blue whale and has parts of its body coloured like one. Though the dorsal fin looks more like a fin whales', as well as the darker areas of its body. It bascially is a cross-breed.
The first blue/fin hybrid was actually discovered here in Iceland in 1986, when it got caught by a whaling boat. After a long investigation it was proved that this animal was a mix between these two breeds.
Yesterday one of the biggest Icelandic newspapers, Morgunblaðið, dedicated the front page and a whole page in the paper to this mysterious individual. The assistant manager of Gentle Giants, Daniel, was interviewed to give the whale watching's perspective. You can see the shorter web version of the article here.
