ANOTHER AWESOME WHALE SHOW
Lately the whales in Skjálfandi Bay proofed once more how adorable these gentle marine mammals are.
It was the second trip on Sylvia at 13:15. We went out into Skjálfandi Bay with a full boat. On the first trip we had already been lucky whale- and weather wise. So we were heading towards the same place where we spotted the whales before. While doing so we crossed our way with a minke whale, which showed up on the surface right in front of the boat.
As soon as we reached the “whale territory” we realized that instead of only one humpback whale there were three of them swimming in the water. Moreover the splashes we saw earlier in a distance, created by jumping dolphins, could be seen closer and closer to the boat.
Finally we ended up with a big group of white-beaked dolphins jumping and swimming around the boat and three humpback whales – all in the same area and for everyone good to see. As if that was not great enough, two of the humpback whales suddenly started to play with the dolphins. They were rolling around in the water, while the dolphins were swimming and jumping between them. It was such a great show for everybody – even the crew – that actually no-one wanted to leave. Sometimes three hours pass way too quickly!
In the end we left all the whales reluctantly but nevertheless very happy and set the course back to Húsavík.
