THE NEW SHRIMP FISHING BOAT
Gentle Giants’ owner Stefán Guðmundsson is a fisherman with 40 years of experience in the bay. Beside the whale watching he owns a fishing company together with his family. They recently invested in a shrimp fishing boat called Árni á Eyri, built from alumnium in 1987.
It arrived to its new home harbour Húsavík for the first time yesterday. The plan is to start fishing straight away. The shrimps will be caught in Skjálfandi bay, boiled on board and flown fresh to e.g. Scandinavia.
The boat is called after Stefán’s great grandfather Árni who was brought up in Eyri, a place on the edge of our bay where the family originates from. He got 16 children and lived the last years of his life on Flatey, one of the islands in our bay. Want to know more about the family history? <-- Follow this link.
You can read more about the boat in the local paper 640.is.
We wish them luck and look forward to get to taste a toothsome shrimp or two.
