VISITED BY FIN WHALE GUESTS
Yesterday we were not only lucky with the weather, but also whale-wise. In the afternoon two uncommon visitors found their way into the bay. These special guests we had around were fin whales!
In the beginning it took some time to figure out what whales we were actually watching. Rumours of a blue whale as well as a sei whale were spreading in-between the different boats out at sea. Finally everyone agreed with fin whale, because of the typical appearance: right jaw white and left jaw grey.
Both whales were staying together the whole time. And since one of them was much smaller than the other one, it might have been mother and calf. On the 16:00 and the 16:45 we got extremely lucky and had the chance to watch them only a few meters away from our boats. From such a short distance these “Greyhounds of the Oceans” are nearly as impressive as the giant blue whales – the biggest animals on earth.
Besides the fin whales we also got humpback whales as well as dolphins and porpoises around the boats. One of the humpback whales showed its whole beauty by jumping once completely out of the water!
So all in all it was a very successful day in whale watching.
