THE HUMPBACK TRIO

Weather in Iceland is always unpredictable; for more than a week we were blessed with great weather- and sea conditions. It has now changed again, but I would like to share with you some lines about a humpback trio we got to encounter some days ago:

For several days we were following a group of three humpbacks on their doings in the bay here. All three stayed close to each other for more than two days, showing up at the same time, taking breaths in unison and even lifting their tails all together when going down for diving.

Furthermore, they were not at all shy, but even approached our boat, surfacing just next to us, diving around or underneath us, showing up on the other side of the boat again and giving us plenty astonishing sights on them.

As humpbacks are just here during summer and will soon start their migration towards the warmer waters of the south, where they spend the winter time, there is not much time left until they will all disappear. Though, it seems as if they kind of hesitate to leave and rather stay here for some time longer. The past days even more humpbacks have entered the bay again and we were able to watch up to seven at a time, some really close, others in a distance, but still all in the same feeding area.
