FIVE SPERM WHALES IN SKJÁLFANDI BAY
A group of five sperm whales were encountered on our 12:30 Big Whale Safari tour today. This is extremely unique and one of the very, very few times in our history that it has ever happened.
Our captain Sverrir said that the sperm whales dived for quite some time but once they re-surfaced they also stayed up for several minutes. Our RIB Amma Kibba got to be alone with the them for a long quality time and were lucky enough to encounter orcas on the way back to harbour. That in itself is also rare!
Sperm whales can dive down to 3000 metres without any problem, are the biggest of the toothed whales, have a head that is about 1/3 of their body length and a significant blow which sprays in a 45° angle.
Congratulations to all of you who got to experience this amazing thing!
