WHALE RESEARCHING-STUDENTS ON BOARD

Thanks to a course in marine mammal science from the University of Iceland, 23 students with different nationalities have got the chance to do research on our wild whales in Skjálfandi Bay.

Marianne Rasmussen, who is an experienced marine mammal scientist based in Húsavík and also the administrator of this annual course, teaches the students on different ways of doing research on marine mammals. They have joined some of our whale watching tours during the last days, on both oak boats and RIBs, and among other things recorded the whales’ sounds with hydrophones.

In a video clip on ruv.is (The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service), one of the students says: “Back in the UK we just don’t have these sort of opportunities, so it’s fantastic to be offered it”. For us at Gentle Giants it feels great to be able to contribute to enthusiastic students’ research.
