ORCA-DREAM COMING TRUE

It's the third season I'm guiding for Gentle Giants. Year by year I wished to spot killer whales one day. But that day never came.

Then, a few days ago, we were heading out on our RIB Amma Sigga when another captain was saying via the radio that they found a pod of orcas.

So many times I had hoped for such a call that I even didn’t realize what that captain was saying. Whilst I was scanning the area for some blows or a whale’s back my captain repeated the others' words and suddenly I understood. Still, I couldn’t believe that was for real until we approached the pod some minutes later – minutes that seemed to be endless.

I was thrilled when watching these whales that I wished to see for such a long time. Retrospectively, I still can’t believe it: I SAW KILLER WHALES FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME!!! Now, afterwards it seems so far away and unreal.

Again and again I am checking my photos to ensure it wasn’t one of so many dreams in which I was out on the boat watching killer whales. And these photos proof it: Two pods of in total 10 – 15 animals were surrounding the RIB. Some individuals had their calves swimming aside.

Encircled by these whales with their huge dorsal fins, the white spots in their face and the fast movements made it an awesome but also awe- inspiring experience. Certainly one of the best things that could have happened this summer and for sure one of those tours that stick in your head forever.
