A FLUKING BLUE AND SIX JUMPING HUMPBACKS
The sea was flat and the sun was shining yesterday. Cruising the bay was a pleasure in itself, and even better it got when a blue whale was spotted. They are spectacular because of their size and this one even raised its flukes while diving, which is a rare and impressive sight. Just imagine that the flukes of a blue whale can be as broad as the width of a small aeroplane.
Our guide Miriam was on board RIB Amma Kibba when they got the chance to encounter this wonderful gentle giant close up. “It is always so impressive to be next to the biggest animal on Earth, ever to exist”, she said with excitement in her voice when talking about yesterday's blue whale encounter.
On the two tours she guided yesterday she saw, except for the blue whale, a total of six breaching humpback whales. Two of them were jumping simultaneously which is indeed yet another impressive sight!
About the whales in our bay she said: “Even if I’ve been out all day, it's still magical every time I see them”.
