HUMPBACK ENJOYING THE COMPANY OF DOLPHINS

Personally, my favorite tours are those in the evening. The day is coming to an end and the quiet and calmness of the nature are indescribable. Then, the sun turns the sky in a hundred different colors. The only noises you hear are the birds and the whales breaking the surface to breath.

The other day we were surrounded by several humpbacks that were moving around slowly and relaxed. The lifting of their fluke when leaving for a dive seemed to be even more beautiful in the evening sun. Especially, if the white spots on the tail were reflecting the red, orange and yellow colors of the sky.

Out of the sudden a pod of dolphins showed up in a distance and just some minutes later they were approaching the boat. One humpback surfaced just next to us when the dolphins dived underneath the boat to reach the humpback on the other side. Soon, they were approaching the larger fellow from all sides, bumping into it or jumping along its huge body. The humpback started rolling on its side, lifted its flipper slowly and then turned upside down, showing its white belly. It kept on rolling for some minutes until it left for another dive. At least that was what we believed it was doing. Instead, it started spy hopping within the dolphins, nudging them several times. The scenery was stunning.

Watch the photos below to get an impression of what we experienced.

Obviously, the whale enjoyed the company.
