IMPRESSIVE SUNSETS WHILST WHALE WATCHING
June and July have been amazing: The weather was great almost all the times, several things – such as Maerudagar, concerts or other activities - were going on in Húsavík and the harbor area was often filled with people, that were excited about going out for whale watching. Many different species of whales have been visiting our bay within that time including seldom seen species such as sperm whales, killer whales and fin whales. Then, a hybrid came along several times and blue whales were passing by throughout May and June.
Still now in August, the small town seems to be very busy and many visitors join us on our tours.
Yet, one can notice the summer will come to an end in a short time: Not only the weather is more autumn-like at the moment, also the nights are getting darker day by day.
Besides that, many birds are about to leave their breeding grounds. Since a few days, one is able to even observe the chicks testing their wings or just chilling on the surface.
Also for some crew members the last days and weeks have started and by mid of August, the first ones are going to leave.
Then, on the 15th of August, the evening tour on our oak boat Sylvía is going out for the very last time of the season. Whoever has the chance should not miss the opportunity to experience that mighty and awesome moments when the day is coming to an end and the quiet and calmness of the nature are all that is left. Then, the sun turns the sky in a hundred different colors whilst disappearing over the horizon, reflecting on the white underside of the humpback’s fluke when the animal is leaving for another dive.
Returning to the harbor in the dawn light, the town seems to be asleep as if it got some rest before another busy and exciting day starts.
