FOUR SPECIES WITHIN FIRST WEEK
The first week of April has passed quickly. Within these days we were able to spot four different species of whales starting from the smallest one, the harbour porpoise, along white-beaked dolphins and a minke whale through to the largest animal existing: the blue whale! Totally unexpected, the blue whale showed up during our first whale watching trip of the season. Blue whales, which are migrating whales, usually don‘t arrive earlier than May! However, this individual has been welcoming us for a couple of days and even though it has not shown up during our last trip, we are hoping for that it is still around and will welcome our passengers on the next tour again!
Whilst the minke was encircling our boat - possibly checking us out - the other day, a group of dolphins was showing off yesterday and even the harbor porpoises were swimming alongside our boat for a little while.
Watch the photos below to get an impression of what we‘ve been experiencing on our boat Faldur the past days – or: visit us in Húsavík to see it for yourself!
We are departing every day from the harbour of Húsavík at 9:45 in the morning!

Unlikely for blue whales this individual has been lifting its fluke - the tail - frequently.
Blue whales are the largest animals to have ever lived. Only their tail can reach a span of up to 8 metres.
Also, whilst the huge mammal is surfacing, one can only see 1/3 of the entire body length. Imagine, how large this individual must be entirely!
