More whales arriving to the bay - humpbacks and blues

July has started as successful as June ended. Yesterday, we saw the young humpback whale from the other day again. Just as last time it was still feeding close to the mountains and the rivermouth of Skjálfandafljót. When we approached the area on our RIB Amma Sigga, hundreds of small fish started to jump out of the water all over. At the same time plenty of birds were circling above our heads and all over the place. And then – just in between all these ongoings – the tiny humpback whale broke the surface with its mouth widely open. Fish was jumping to all sides of its mouth and at the same moment the birds flew down to the water to catch the fish escaping the whale‘s mouth.

Today another four blue whales showed up in the bay and have been seen on all tours. Along that, some humpbacks returned to Skjálfandi and the boats were able to spot several individuals on the same tour. Even though the weather up here wasn‘t perfect, the sighting were indeed!
