FAMILIAR HUMPBACKS IN THE BAY AND TRAVELING AROUND ICELAND
There have been high numbers of feeding humpbacks in the bay recently, with at least 7 spotted just in one area this morning! Many of them are familiar flukes from past years, and some of these humpbacks that are spending time in our bay have also been spotted in other parts of Iceland.
Since there is the unique opportunity to photograph so many humpbacks every season in the bay, researchers are able to tell which humpbacks are returning and other places that they have been spotted around the country and around the world. Humpback whales have a black and white pattern on the underside of the fluke (tail) which is unique to each individual and makes them identifiable. We have been learning that humpbacks in the bay here have been doing some traveling around the country. For example, a humpback spotted here last month, was also spotted in Reykjavik in the spring of last year. Also, a humpback spotted in Grundarfjordur this week was also spotted here in the bay in the summer of last year. Its always so interesting to meet humpbacks here in the bay and then be able to follow their journey through photographs throughout the years!
