WHITE-BEAKED DOLPHINS EVERYWHERE….ACCOMPANIED BY SOME CUTE LITTLE SURPRISES

In the past few weeks we have seen many pods of white-beaked dolphins in the bay. Today they were the stars on our two trips on Sylvía.

We encountered large groups of these beautiful dolphins all over the bay. Even better, besides many adults we also got to see small ones - their calves. It couldn´t have been better.

When we first saw them they were circling in that area, it seemed as if they were hunting. These year-round residents feed on a variety of fish species (including capelin and sandeel) and few cephalopods.

After a few seconds we saw the small calves popping up on the surface very close to their presumptive mothers. It looked like they were imitating adult behaviour. So the little ones have started school or school life.

Little is known about their reproduction behaviour in this viking waters. However, calving is known to take place over the summer time, approximately from May to August and after 11 months of gestation. Now moms are busy looking after their young ones.

You are very welcome to join our trips and enjoy these creatures as much as we did today.

Sightings in September couldn´t start any better.
