THE LUCKY ONES - 4 FIN WHALES IN THE BAY

Fin Whales are rather rare visitors in our bay and pass by only every now and then. Today not only one, but four at the time entered Skjálfandi and were seen in the morning. First all of them swam together, but splitted up after a while to swim in pairs. With up to 25m in length they are the second largest whales - only the blue whale is bigger. Fin whales are migrating whales and hence they might be on their way south. Coming from even colder waters high up north, Iceland lays on their migration route. Along many other whales they feed on plankton, krill and small schooling fish in the northerly waters but swim into low-latitude waters to mate and give birth to their calves.

Along the fin whales also two humpbacks were sighted along the Cheek Mountains on the other side of the bay in the morning. Later on, we followed one of them on our RIB Amma Sigga whilst it was travelling along the mountain range.
