BLUE WHALE EXHIBITION OPENS IN THE HÚSAVÍK WHALE MUSEUM

Blue Whale Exhibition opens in Húsavík

A new exhibition featuring a real blue whale skeleton was opened at the Húsavík Whale Museum last weekend. This is big news literally for the museum and for Húsavík.

The blue whale was found beached in 2010 in Skagi in northwest Iceland. In 2015, the government decided that the skeleton would be exhibited at the Húsavík Whale Museum for the next eight years. Blue whales are the largest animals on earth and can reach a length of 20-30 metres and weigh up to 190 tonnes.

The museum has been closed for the winter but reopened at the weekend after setting up the new exhibition. In a news interview with the national TV channel RÚV, Jan Klitgaard, the manager of the Húsavík Whale Museum, estimates that there are maximum ten such blue whale skeletons in museums worldwide.

Entrance to the Húsavík Whale Museum is free of charge this week. During the whale watching season, our customers get 20% discount to the museum.

We at Gentle Giants send our warmest congratulations to the Húsavík Whale Museum and are proud of having such a world-class museum in our hometown Húsavík!
