SUMMER BIRDS

puffin on surface

Annually puffins arrive all over Iceland – about 70% of the Atlantic Puffin can be observed around the country during summer. They can be seen along the coastline or – as here in Skjálfandi Bay – on islands. Especially “Lundey” (Puffin Island) hosts a big number of puffins which arrive for their yearly breeding season. However, this is actually the only time of the year that puffins enter land as they spend the winter time floating on the waters of the open ocean.

Being just fun to watch, one shouldn’t miss out the chance of seeing these adorable seabirds, also called the “clowns of the ocean”. Their breeding season is about to end though and in latest two weeks all the puffins, which have been entertaining us all summer, will head back to the open sea!

At Gentle Giants, you get the chance of combining a puffin excursion with a whale watching experience aboard our RIB speed boats! Check out our “GG2 Big Whale Safari & Puffins” for more information on the tour and departure times!
Don’t miss out what Skjálfandi Bay has to offer!
