ORCAS (KILLER WHALES) VISITING SKJÁLFANDI BAY

killer whales surfacing

Yesterday (14.8.16) in the early evening yet another surprise awaited us out in the bay. Not being sighted since April, a pod of at least 15 killer whales (orcas) was spending some time in the outer part of Skjálfandi Bay not far from Flatey Island. But not only a large male and several females were delighting us: A few calves were travelling with the group of which one was probably born quite recently! Every time a tiny head or dorsal fin was sighted on the surface, a loud “ooooh” or “aaaaah” sounded over the boat! The excitement about the unusual sight was indescribable! The orcas were moving very slowly, barely left for a dive and even approached our boats a couple of times! Truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
