MARINE MAMMALS COURSE

Two humpback whales

Since Saturday, the annual University of Iceland “studying marine mammals in the wild” course has been taking place in Husavik. Students come both from Icelandic universities and from abroad for the week long course, and Gentle Giants is happy to participate in this again this year. As a PhD researcher from the University of Iceland, and also a researcher/guide with Gentle Giants, I’ve had the opportunity to be taking the students on board our oak boats to give them hands-on experience taking photo-identification data, and learning about the different species in the bay.

The whales have certainly cooperated with the course, with no less than 10 humpback whales sighted on our GG1 tour last night, as well as wonderful sightings of minke whales and white-beaked dolphins in the past days!
