SKJÁLFANDI BAY, A HOPE SPOT!

Skjálfandi Bay, with puffin island on the horizon

Recently, Skjálfandi Bay and the Northeast of Iceland were considered as a Hope Spot! This is the first time that a region in Iceland is considered as such.

A Hope Spot is defined as any special place that is important to the health of the ocean— is recognised as Earth's blue heart! With this attribution, hope spots are about recognizing and empowering people around the world in their efforts to protect the ocean.

The Northeast Iceland’s topographic features is unique anywhere else in the world. The region hosts deep water ecosystems as well as sandy, shallow areas and rocky places where kelp forests prosper. It means is a rich area in nutrients where whales, dolphins and marine birds are observed feeding, regularly.

Skjálfandi Bay is home of several marine mammals and marine birds that visit us throughout the year. Minke whales, humpbacks whales, blue whales, atlantic puffins and arctic terns are one of the species among others that we could see during the summer months. Lundey (Puffin island) and Flatey Island are breeding places of thousands of marine birds, that mainly arrive during summer.

Indeed Skjálfandi Bay is a special place!

Do you want to witness the wildlife of this bay? Come and join us in one of our tours!
