GLEÐILEGAN ÞJÓÐHÁTÍÐARDAG / HAPPY NATIONAL ICELAND DAY

Happy 17th of June!

Today is Iceland’s national day and one of the most important holidays in Iceland, which commemorates the foundation of the Republic of Iceland in 1944.

This date marks the end of Iceland's ties with Denmark, through an agreement between the two nations. The date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of Jón Sigurðsson, an important figure of Icelandic culture and the leader of the 19th century Icelandic independence movement.

Is time to celebrate the unity of Icelanders and the reunion of families!

Traditionally, the celebrations take place as parades, live music, carnival rides and varied community events all over the country.  Here in Húsavík, is commonly to have music events and seeing Icelanders raise proudly their Icelandic flags in houses and cars.

And the best way for us to celebrate this day is to share the beauty of Húsavík and Skjálfandi Bay wildlife!
